Basically, overlapping is a scheduling approach where the next operation is started on the first part of a batch without waiting for the preceding operation to be finished for the other parts of the batch.
The implementation of overlapping requires the following information:
• A transfer lot has to be entered into the routings, or on the WO. If the transfer lot field is left empty, no overlapping is implemented. When a transfer lot is entered in the field, the size of the transfer lot must be at least a hundredth of the size of the production lot, in such a way that there will be at a maximum 100 transfer lots.
• The type of overlapping has been specified on successive operations. For a particular operation, the overlapping is specified relative to the previous operation, which means that overlapping for the first operation of the WO is impossible.
• In order to use overlapping, it is necessary to click in the Overlapping box in the Preference window, Planning tab.
There are three possible types of overlapping:
• '01' Early Setup: The set-up is started before the first part of the first transfer lot arrives at the machine.
• '10' Simple overlap: The set-up is started when the first lot arrives at the machine.
• '11' Early Setup and overlap: The set-up is started in such a way that production can start when the first lot arrives at the machine.
